If you're a veteran pot smoker like myself, you may have a preference as to which type of marijuana you prefer, indica or sativa. Maybe a hyrbid? If you are new or know nothing about this, this article is for you!
Indica
Cannabis indica, has thicker leafs, usually more dense buds and tends to give more of a body type high. They tend to grow much shorter in size, and it also tends to have higher THC levels in comparison to CBD. Sativa tends to have lower THC levels of THC to CBD. That doesn't mean you won't get as high, it means that the effects will be different. If you're looking for a more laid back high and not so much in your head, indica might be for you.
Typical uses: Insomnia, pain, soreness, nausea, etc....
Some popular strains are: Ice Wreck, Northern Lights, Pineapple Kush, Sensi Star and Blue Mystic, to name a few.
Sativa
Cannabis sativa, has thinner/longer leafs, "fluffier" buds and can give you a strong and direct head high. If you want something that will make you feel more so high than stoned, like a smack in the face, sativa might be for you and yes there's a difference between my terms — high and stoned (lol). One makes you more awakened and in your head while the other makes you very relaxed. Keep in consideration, that there's hybrid plants which carry features from both and honestly, you can't go wrong there.
Typical uses: Depression, fatigue, anxiety, nausea, etc...
Some popular strains are: Sour Diesel, Shining Silver Haze, Power Flower, and Fruit Spirit, to name a few.
Scientists aren't sure if indica and sativa are technically two different species of plants or not. Obviously they're both part of the marijuana family but they aren't exactly the same. Take note, there's certain strains from each that may be more like the other and this is where the hybrid plant comes into play as mentioned above. Both carry incredible medical utility.
Hybrids
Who doesn't want the best of both worlds?
Hybrids are generally thought to balance the force of marijuana by offering you great qualities from both. What it boils down to for all plants, regardless of which type, is the fact that THC and CBD are molecular structures with their own make-up. It's unique, like the genes in your body. Each unique lovely scented smell aka Terpenes, has its own effects. Terpenes is basically the scented oil that's in the buds resin and they modulate the effects of the cannabinoids. I read that cannabis strains are the sum of smaller parts that may be passed on genetically. With that said, there is still room for variation, which is what makes mary jane so damn fascinating! Oh and marijuana plants are so freaking beautiful!
Popular Hybrid Strains: Mango Kush, $100 OG, Skywalker OG (my favorite), Purple Haze, Maui Waui, Super Silver Haze, Alaskan Thunder Fuck, Pineapple Express, and probably the most popular of them all...Blue Dream. Maybe Pineapple Express is more popular thanks to Seth Rogen and his badass movie.
If you're new to the marijuana world and are interested in trying it out, I encourage you! Obviously, if you live in a state where you are legally allowed to, then I strongly encourage you. If you are fortunate to live in a state and can go to a dispensary, they will show you everything you need to know and more. Knowing your strains and types of weed are good because dealers make up names all the time and I'm sure some dispensaries bullshit their customers too. It's good to know the difference between indica and sativa. When you understand what kind of bud you got then you can understand what you like and don't like, therefore having the option to try something else. Herb is medicine whether you need physical, mental or emotional healing, there's so many benefits, even to the recreational user.
