The legalization of recreational marijuana in Washington is creating all sorts of new business opportunities for entrepreneurs, and the latest seems to be pot delivery. Several businesses already exist in the Seattle area currently catering to medical marijuana patients who prefer home delivery of their pot.
One such service, Nurse Nancy Medical Marijuana Delivery offers pot brought right to your door, seven days a week between 10 am and 2 am. The service is free to sign up for and serves anyone living in the Seattle city limits; participants must show proof of medical marijuana authorization and a government ID and have to pay in cash.
Nurse Nancy is run by a career nurse and her two sons, one of whom claims in an online bio to use medical marijuana himself to treat celiac disease. The business promises discreet delivery in 30 minutes. The website has a product page listing the four types of pot in stock and advertises it as "grown locally by professional horticulturists using organic nutrients and love." There are suggested donations listed for different amounts of pot.
An online search of medical marijuana delivery services turns up a handful of local businesses operating primarily in King and Snohomish counties. All have similar stipulations that participants sign up for a free membership, which requires a medical marijuana authorization. Many sites offer daily specials – one company, Kured Collective, even offers a punch card program.
Like most potential business ventures involving recreational marijuana in Washington, delivery of the drug is faces potential scrutiny at the federal level – where the drug is still deemed an illegal narcotic. The Justice Department has said it does not plan to go after sick people who use medical marijuana, but there has still been no decision on whether it will try to block the state licensing of pot growers, processors and stores.
The Washington Liquor Control Board's new marijuana regulations are set to take effect in September and legal recreational pot sales are expected to begin in Washington in early 2014, likely offering these delivery businesses a chance to expand their services even more.
