Authorities flying over a rural Peterson field discovered and later seized about 4,000 marijuana plants placed at a street value of under $4 million Thursday.
Clay County Sheriff Randy Krukow said it was the largest marijuana outdoor grow operation found in the county to date. It will undoubtedly make a dent in the local market, Krukow said. Authorities have been unable to determine who is responsible for the plants due to the remote location. The seizure ended a marijuana grow investigation, Clay County Sheriff's Deputy Bradley A. Hawley announced in a press release Friday. At 2 p.m., the Clay County Sheriff's Office assisted by a military reconnaissance team helicopter identified the marijuana operation north of Peterson, a town of with a population of about 360.
At 6 p.m., authorities armed with a search warrant entered the property southeast of 4994 125th Ave. There they discovered an area approximately 100 yards long containing close to 4,000 marijuana plants, Hawley said.
The plants were treated with fertilizer and the area appeared to be rid of weeds, he said.
The marijuana plants were pulled from the ground and loaded into a dump truck, which hauled them to Spencer, Iowa. The marijuana will be destroyed after samples and photographs are taken.
A Department of Narcotics Enforcement projected yield placed the value at under $4 million based on each plant producing one pound of processed marijuana, Hawley said
