Nature Med Inc., a marijuana dispensary, is now open in Marana.
The dispensary, located at 5390 W. Ina Road, is being touted by its owners as a one-stop-shop for those in need of a medical marijuana card certification or renewals and marijuana.
Nature Med Inc. is also in the process of cultivating its own marijuana, allowing it to have better control over inventory.
Michael Schmidt is the president of the company and his son Jacob Schmidt is the general manager of the dispensary, which opened earlier this month.
On July 20, they held their grand opening with numerous people coming out throughout the day seeking information as the company aimed to educate visitors.
Michael, who is a registered nurse, ultimately wants to dispel possible myths and misunderstandings about marijuana. In addition, he likes having the ability to offer marijuana to those who would like to try an alternative to homeopathic medication.
"This is a medicine, a holistic herb, that has been used for thousands of years by mankind," Michael said.
Citing thousands of deaths a year from people overdosing on pain-management drugs such as oxycodone, Michael reassures that it is nearly impossible to overdose on cannabis.
"It's a natural herb that does not adversely affect your liver, or your kidneys like a lot of the medications do," he said.
Making sure the marijuana Nature Med Inc. sells is up to the Schmidts' liking, they oversee the cultivation of the plants. Seeing as the dispensary was only recently approved for operation, cultivation has just begun. The plants they are growing will be available for purchase in about three months.
"We have complete control on the quality and on lab testing," Michael said. "That's the beauty of this, that this is lab tested. There are no chemicals and there are no pesticides —it is high quality."
Currently the dispensary is selling marijuana they have either been given by private growers, care takers, or purchased from other cultivators.
Michael knows first hand the benefits of marijuana. During the course of the past four years, he has had five surgeries on his leg, an injury that is the result of a motorcycle accident. He estimated he was paying, with insurance, about $140 per month in pain pills. Now, he estimates that he pays $80-$100 per month by managing his pain with marijuana and sees the results of the medication almost immediately.
"The neat thing about cannabis is that it takes effect right away if you inhale it either by vapor or by smoke. So you end up using a lot less medicine because it takes effect right away — within minutes," he said.
The conditions a person can currently receive a medical marijuana card are; cancer, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis C, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Crohn's disease, agitation of Alzheimer's disease, along with debilitation conditions such as severe and chronic pain, severe nausea, seizures and muscle spasms or anything chronic or debilitating disease of medical condition or treatment approved by the Department of Health.
