It was a very marijuana Christmas as pot deliveries increased leading up to the holiday.

Data provided by marijuana technology company Eaze determined that marijuana deliveries on December 23rd increased 22% over the yearly Friday average and on Christmas Eve, they jumped another 6%. Christmas Day deliveries fell by 10%, but then on Monday the 26th, a big 23% climb in deliveries. Eaze serves thousands of patients in nearly 100 markets lending a great deal of credibility to these numbers.

New Year's Eve is going to be even bigger for celebrating. Last year Eaze reported that a 71% increase in deliveries on December 31 and a 41% increase on New Year's Day. That is compared to typical deliveries throughout the year. Eaze suggests that for ringing in the new year there's a 24 carat gold rolling paper by Shine. You too can be just like the wise men bringing gifts of gold to your party host.

Thanksgiving experienced a similar boost with the Wednesday before the holiday becoming the second busiest day of the year for deliveries. It is so popular that marijuana businesses are dubbing it Green Wednesday in a nod to Black Friday. Eaze said that transactions were 71% higher than the yearly average for Wednesday.

There are a few theories behind the increase in sales. One is that people want to reduce the anxiety they may feel from the holidays. Whether it's dealing with stressful family situations or facing a holiday that isn't as swell as what you see on television, some people just need to take the edge off.

Then there's the entertainment factor. Marijuana is becoming accepted as a party enhancer along the lines of alcohol. Josh King of Avvo's legal insights advises party hosts to warn their guests if they have THC goodies on the buffet table. "If recreational marijuana is legal, you are welcome to serve pot brownies at your party. Probably a good idea to let attendees know before they munch," he said.

Others believe the increase in sales is due to people gifting their friends and party hosts with marijuana. Many of the dispensaries offered special holiday sales and some of the producers created special holiday products.

Sales after the holidays tend to drop and even out until the next big marijuana holiday, April 20. Then they pick up again in the summer months. As the market matures, it becomes just like regular retail.
