Greenway University, the first state-approved and regulated medical marijuana university in the U.S., is planning a new Arizona campus.

The school, which provides education in the medical marijuana industry, is seeking roughly 10,000 square feet of space in the Phoenix area for its facilities.

The university already has approximately 2,000 students at a 25,000-square-foot campus in Colorado. But with the passage of Proposition 203 in Arizona, Gus Escamilla, founder and CEO of the university, is looking to expand.

"We particularly like the southern portion of Scottsdale although it would be kind of novel to open Greenway on Greenway, further to the north," Escamilla said. He said the campus would need to have the potential to grow larger and would be a hub of jobs and student activity. "We want to create an epicenter of professionalism and integrity for the medical marijuana industry."

Escamilla said school officials are scouting potential locations around the Valley, and many have been receptive to the university's needs.

As people around the state prepare to open dispensaries and hydroponic shops, Escamilla said it is crucial to have a central location that provides proper education and training. Opening a satellite campus in Arizona would allow the university to do this.

"We are going to incorporate a full line of curriculum specifically for the Arizona marketplace," Escamilla said

Curriculum would focus on areas such as business management, technology, cultivation and market needs.

To promote education in Arizona's medical marijuana industry, Greenway University will be holding a medical marijuana industry event from 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 29 to 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 30 at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale. Over the course of the two-day event, Greenway officials will touch on how Arizona's medical marijuana law works, in addition to explaining how to operate and manage a dispensary.

"This is going to be a thriving industry which can really boost the local economy, but only if it's done properly," Escamilla said. "It is critical and key to work with local and state legislators to insure that things are done properly. We hope to drive the message of how important it is to have education before implementation."
