Nebraska spent about $10 million on enforcement of marijuana laws in 2014, according to a new report.
The study from the Nebraska Center for Justice Research found counties along the Colorado border, in the panhandle, and along Interstate 80 had the highest rates of marijuana arrests in 2014.
"We showed an about 11 percent increase in Nebraska's marijuana arrest rate, statewide," Ryan Spohn, Center director told Nebraska Radio Network affiliate KLIN. "That's a pretty big one year jump."
Spohn expects the number of arrests to level off, but he said there still could be a slight increase.
The report also found marijuana possession arrests were greater than sale or manufacture arrests.
"What we're suspecting is just more small amounts of marijuana being transported down I-80 through Nebraska and to states that are east of Nebraska and Colorado," Spohn said.
Spohn said the $10 million spent on enforcing marijuana laws in 2014 occurred mostly in counties along I-80.
