You run a TV station in Topeka and you want to illustrate a story about people who smoke marijuana. How do you find some good footage on deadline?
The Drug Policy Alliance, which helped finance marijuana legalization campaigns in Oregon and Washington, would like you to use of its new background videos of pot smokers in Portland.
And we're not talking about Keep-Portland-Weird stoners, either. Think average-looking folks lighting up with friends over a board game. Or a couple cozying up on a couch with a pot-fueled vape pen.
This is the alliance's latest effort to change media portrayals of marijuana smokers. In April, they released a series of photos free for media use that was more Martha Stewart domesticity than Mary Jane stoner.
"We've all seen it before, a serious news story about marijuana policy that cuts away to footage of a young guy covered in tie-dye and marijuana leaves who looks more or less like a cannabis cartoon," Sharda Sekaran, an alliance spokeswoman said in a press release. "It's goofy, awkward, distracting and doesn't reflect the average marijuana consumer, who more than likely looks like a normal person you might see at a bank, supermarket or office."
In an interview, Sekaran said the alliance asked several people - some of whom they recruited over Craigslist - to show up at a borrowed house and smoke pot for the camera. She said all of them had medical marijuana cards, making everything strictly legit. Recreational marijuana won't be legal in Oregon until July 1.
