A Durango man is proposing to open a medical marijuana cultivation business at the Tech Center, just off U.S. Highway 160 west within city limits.
Chris Rezek has filed an application for a business license with the city of Durango.

He declined to discuss the proposal in detail, saying it is still in its early stages. The business would be named Medical Horticultural Services LLC and would be located at 789 Tech Center Drive, according to the business application.

"All I've done is apply for a business license," Rezek said. "It's all in the first stages."

Four medical marijuana dispensaries have opened this year - all at about the same time.

It is possible the cultivation business could supply those dispensaries with medical marijuana, but two of the four dispensaries said they were unfamiliar with Rezek's business plan.

Matt Price, an employee at Nature's Medicine, a dispensary in Durango, said the cultivation business sounds like a good idea, but he wonders whether it plans to have clients.

Under state law, medical marijuana providers are required to be caregivers, which includes helping clients in more ways than supplying them with marijuana, Price said.

"He won't be able to possess plants without clients," he said. "That's illegal."

Cultivation businesses must comply with the same city ordinance as dispensaries, which includes installing a security system and keeping the medical marijuana locked up, said Durango police Capt. Micki Browning.

"We knew that there had been a business application for it," she said.

The city is in the process of reviewing the application for a business license.
