A Canadian man arrested a year ago with almost 100 pounds of marijuana was spared jail time, but has been deported from the country, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Vermont.
Ted Stang, 29, of Ontario, was arrested on April 20, 2009, by Border Patrol agents conducting an immigration checkpoint on Interstate 91.
In the trunk of the rental car Stang was driving, agents found three duffel bags containing 92 pounds of marijuana.
Stang later told investigators that someone had paid him $5,400 to drive the bags – which he believed contained either drugs or guns – to New York City.
Stang was held by U.S. immigration officials for about two months after which he was deported to Canada, Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Waples said.
He returned to the U.S. last week for sentencing, following his plea of guilty to a charge that he possessed marijuana with intent to distribute.
Despite the nature of the charge and the quantity of the drug, Stang's sentence did not include incarceration. Instead, Judge J. Garvan Murtha sentenced him to serve a two-year term of supervised release.
Asked why Stang was offered a plea agreement that did not include jail time, Waples said the agreement was based on Stang's overall involvement.
"As best as we can tell, it was a one-shot affair," Waples said. "He appeared to have a very limited role."
