SAN DIEGO - A man was convicted of federal drug trafficking charges today for driving a trailer-truck across the Otay Mesa border loaded with more than 6,700 pounds of marijuana mixed with 30,000 pounds of frozen squid.
A jury found Roberto Armenta-Orozco guilty of conspiracy to distribute marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and importation of marijuana, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Sherri Walker Hobson.
Armenta-Orozco's manifest claimed he was transporting the frozen squid, which was ultimately destined for South Korea, Walker Hobson said.
A narcotic detector dog alerted authorities to the presence of a drug emanating from Armenta-Orozco's trailer on April 14, 2003, but the defendant was unaware of the situation when he dropped off the trailer at a nearby truck stop, the prosecutor said.
Four co-conspirators were arrested at the truck stop as they attempted to switch the packages of marijuana with packages of frozen squid from a second truck, Walker Hobson said.
The four co-conspirators pleaded guilty to drug charges before trial and will be sentenced June 11, the prosecutor said.
Armenta-Orozco is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 30.
