But they didn't find as much marijuana as one would expect. Corrano Panno admitted having destroyed about 30 marijuana plants in the Colchester landfill before the drug bust, police said.
Police said they received information that Panno was cultivating marijuana inside his home. When they arrived late Thursday afternoon to search it, they found a 10-foot by 15-foot basement growing room, several marijuana pipes, two ballast lights, timers, a reflector light, carbon dioxide tanks, fertilizer and a chemical gel that eliminates marijuana odors, police said. The tanks had meters and were used for cultivating, police said. Marijuana plants enriched with additional carbon dioxide and grown under intense light grow at a much faster rate, they said.
Police said they found less than four ounces of marijuana.
"The homeowner admitted destroying several marijuana plants this morning in Colchester's landfill because he had a feeling the police would arrive," a police press release states.
Panno, 42, of 340 Diane Drive, was charged with destruction of evidence, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and cultivation of marijuana, police said. He is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Manchester Nov. 30.
East Central Narcotics made the arrest with help from South Windsor officers. The task force is made up of officers from South Windsor, Manchester and Glastonbury.
