BRIDGEPORT -- Grant Johnson will be spending Christmas in jail after police said they discovered that two "presents" mailed to him from Los Angeles contained 22 pounds of marijuana.
Johnson, 28, of Kossuth Street, was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of more than four ounces of marijuana. He is being held in lieu of $75,000 bond.
Police on Monday were alerted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service that two "suspicious" boxes had been mailed from Los Angeles and were sitting in the Boston Avenue post office. Police said the white, wrapped boxes, were addressed to two vacant apartments, one on Kossuth Street and the other on Orchard Street.
Officers staked out the addresses as mail carriers delivered the packages. A short time later, Johnson pulled up to the Orchard Street address in a BMW sports utility vehicle, police said. A few minutes later, officers allegedly saw Johnson put the box into his SUV.
They followed Johnson as he drove to the Kossuth Avenue address and picked up the second package, police said.
He was then arrested.
Police said one package held 12 pounds of marijuana while the other contained 10 pounds.
