A 26-year-old Victoria man has avoided jail time after being caught with 16
kilograms of marijuana and a large amount of cash last June.
Jean-Guy Hogya, who pleaded guilty to charges of drug possession for the
purpose of trafficking, was given a 12-month conditional sentence Thursday
by Victoria provincial court Judge Wayne Smith.
Hogya was arrested after Victoria police responding, to a house alarm on
Balmoral Road, came across the marijuana which had an estimated street
value of $250,000. They also found $141,222 US and $7,368 Cdn.
Also seized were cellular phones, a global-positioning system, camouflage
gear, maps and weapons.
Among the conditions of his sentence, Hogya is prohibited from using
alcohol or non-prescription drugs, must submit to urinalysis or
breathalyser tests on demand and to regular searches of his residence and
observe a daily curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. He must also pay a $55,000
fine, which will come out of the funds seized by police.
Smith said he was satisfied that Hogya is remorseful and has taken steps
"to get on with a productive and proper life."
