Boston - More than 1.7 million Massachusetts voters approved a ballot initiative to legalize recreational marijuana. But now state lawmakers may be putting the brakes on the plan.

Legislative leaders on Beacon Hill have made no secret that they have concerns about how pot would be legalized in the state.

The ballot measure, which allows for possession, use and home growing of the drug, is supposed to take effect on Dec. 15.

On Monday, after meeting with Gov. Charlie Baker and House Speaker Robert DeLeo, Senate President Stan Rosenberg said he would not rule out a delay.

Other key dates in the plan include a Cannabis Control Commission in place by March and retail stores would start selling the drug by January 2018.

As with any other law, Beacon Hill can vote to change it.
