A medical marijuana facility might be coming to Falmouth, and the Falmouth Board of Selectmen wants to be prepared if it does.

Selectmen voted 4-1 Monday night, October 17, to authorize town manager Julian M. Suso to draft a memorandum of understanding outlining the town's terms for opening a medical marijuana facility in town. Selectman Susan L. Moran voted against preparing the memorandum.

Mr. Suso said Seven Point, a medical marijuana dispensary based out of Oak Park, Illinois, has designs to open a dispensary on Teaticket Highway across from Stop & Shop. The company is one of "two or three" that have approached the town with interest in opening a facility in Falmouth, he said.

"There have been several knocks at the door," he said.

Drafting a memorandum of understanding will allow the town more opportunity to have some say over how the facility would operate, selectmen chairman Douglas H. Jones said.

"If we take a proactive approach, we can get something out of this project," he said. "If we do nothing, we'll have very little to say."

Ms. Moran expressed reservations with drafting a memorandum. She said while organizations such as Seven Point might have plans to operate a medical marijuana facility now, those plans could change if Question 4 passes in the November general election.

"If we're in favor of this proposal, we may be getting into more than what's in the original proposal," she said.

However, Mr. Suso said that Seven Point can open up its facility by right without a special permit. The proposed facility is located in an area zoned for a medical marijuana operation, he said.

"I don't think we can expect this to disappear one way or the other," he said.

Others on the board said drafting the memorandum can only help the town moving forward.

"Now is a window of opportunity to carve out some benefits for the town, and to have some restraints built into the MOU," selectman Megan E. English Braga said.

Mr. Jones added that even with a memorandum between the town and Seven Point, the company's application to open up the facility would still be subject to the board's review.

Calls made to Seven Point for comment on plans for the facility were not returned.
