Fall River - Four companies have the green light from the city to pursue marijuana dispensary licenses.
One of those companies has land and the approval of the state to build a facility to grow and process marijuana for medicine.
Medical marijuana is legal in Massachusetts. Companies are rushing now to get state and local approval to set up grow facilities and dispensaries.
The first step, for companies that want to sell marijuana or products made from cannabinoids, is to get a letter of approval or of non-opposition from the municipality where the dispensary will be located.
"We've issued four letters of non-opposition," said Joseph Macy, the lawyer for the city. "We have three host community agreements. We are waiting on the fourth."
Cannatech Medicinals is the leader of the group. That company purchased 12 acres in the biopark and has cleared the site, preparing to build a facility that will grow and process marijuana.
Dr. Henry Crowley, company president, said most of the marijuana grown will be processed into oils or developed into lozenges, ointments or beverages to be used as medicine.
Different strains and hybrids of the cannabis plant can yield medicines that can shrink tumors, prevent seizures, stimulate appetites, prevent nausea and relieve anxiety, marijuana advocates say.
Cannatech Medicinals is one of the companies with permission to operate a dispensary. It has also purchased land off of Hartwell Street to build and operate a dispensary there.
Haven Center of Orleans, Xiphias Wellness of Uxbridge and Hope, Heal, Health of Warren, Rhode Island, also have letters of non-opposition from the city.
Hope, Heal, Health has an agreement to buy a former mill near Anawan Street as a facility if it gets the necessary state permissions.
All of this is taking place while the state is preparing to vote on a referendum question that, if passed, will make recreational marijuana legal in Massachusetts.
"This whole issue is in a state of flux right now," Macy said.
