Mansfield - The area's first medical marijuana dispensary could open by next fall, according to the facility's co-founder.
Selectmen approved a host agreement sought by CommCann for the location on West Street in the Cabot Business Park.
Last March, the board approved a letter of support for the facility.
The agreement was approved on a 3-2 vote with George Dentino, Frank DelVecchio and Michael Trowbridge in favor and Steven Schoonveld and Chairman Jess Aptowitz opposed.
Ellen Rosenfeld, president of the board of directors of CommCann, said the state has already given provisional approval for the site and two other locations sought by the non-profit group. CommCann is also applying for a special permit, which will require a hearing before the planning board.
She said the Mansfield location could open in the fall of 2017.
CommCann officials said medical marijuana would be sold under tight security only to qualified patients with state-issued medical marijuana cards. They said the site would not sell recreational marijuana, even if future changes in state law allowed them to do so.
The agreement also provides for a payment of 3 percent of the dispensary's proceeds to the town, with a minimum payment of $100,000 annually. The agreement also includes $25,000 to be used by the schools and the local police for educational programs.
