Co - With reggae music blaring and a barbecue feast for his customers, one Loveland medical marijuana dispensary owner set out to celebrate 4/20 in style.

Knowing there would be 4/20 celebrations in Denver and Boulder, Jesse Alfaro, owner of Northern Colorado Alternative Medicine, also wanted to make the day special for his patients on April 20 or 4/20, unofficially known as National Weed Day.

So, Alfaro and members of his staff, including his wife, Lena Delafuente, and partner, Trent Nichols, prepared for a celebration.

Motorists driving by 3228 E. Eisenhower Boulevard on Tuesday saw a banner surrounding the dispensary, a large 4/20 designed gold balloon and people enjoying a barbeque meal under a tent.

“We’re having a huge party for 4/20,” Alfaro said. “We were busy this morning, and hoping right at 4:20 (p.m.) when everyone’s getting off work, we’ll get packed again.”

The celebration attracted several community members, including one man who was drawn to the business because of the decorations and stepped inside to check out the dispensary.

Alfaro said he hoped to attract about 125 people. However, no smoking would be allowed at the dispensary during the celebration.

Throughout the day, Alfaro offered free give-a-ways and disc jockey Ike Turner played music including songs by Bob Marley, Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix. At the barbeque, people could also sample medicated marijuana cakes, brownies, soups and snacks.

Patients also received their medication at cost, discounted cigarettes and a free brownies. Alfaro said he hoped to liquidate as much as possible.

He said no other dispensary in the area planned such a large-scale celebration.

“They (the patients) love it,” Alfaro said. “We’re just basically giving everything away.”

Ryan Millard and his girlfriend, Tabitha Tarpinian, sat under a tent enjoying the barbeque meal early Tuesday afternoon.

“I think that it’s a really good opportunity to celebrate something natural that really makes people happy,” said Millard, a dispensary patient. “We’re just going to eat lunch here.”

Their lunch included medicated hot wings and medicated ranch dressing.

“It tastes really good, like normal food,” Millard said. “They have good deals today. … It’s a nice location right off the main street.”

Afterward, Millard and Tarpinian planned to participate in a Boulder 4/20 celebration that was expected to draw thousands of people to the University of Colorado campus.
