Law enforcement agencies are shifting their stance on Louisiana's strict marijuana laws, at least a bit.
The Louisiana Sheriffs' Association previously opposed developing a way to distribute pot, as allowed under a 1991 medical marijuana law. Now the organization supports a proposal to get medical marijuana to patients with cancer, glaucoma and a form of cerebral palsy.
Patients couldn't smoke marijuana under Parks Sen. Fred Mills' bill, approved Monday by the full Senate. But they could consume refined cannabis products.
Meanwhile, the Louisiana District Attorney Association supports a bill by New Orleans Rep. Austin Badon to reduce sentences for repeat marijuana offenders.
The bill, scheduled for a committee hearing Wednesday, would cap the maximum sentence at 8 years. Currently repeat offenders can be sentenced to 20 years for simple possession.
