Enfield, CT - The legalization of recreational marijuana will be voted on this November. If legalized, it could be an issue for neighboring towns.
Connecticut has decriminalized small amounts of marijuana and allows it for medicinal purposes, but has stopped short of recreational use.
"Things are changing. Marijuana is not what it used to be law wise," Richard Drouin, of Broad Brook, said.
Drouin said times have certainly changed. He would never have imagined states would be legalizing marijuana.
Colorado, Alaska, Oregon, Washington and the District of Columbia allow pot for recreational use. Massachusetts could be next.
Massachusetts resident Larry Derosier said the taxes from legalization of recreational marijuana would "absolutely" help the state.
"I think it would be a great help," Derosier said.
There are some, who don't have a problem with it. Connecticut lawmakers have approved marijuana for a few serious illnesses and if you're caught with an ounce or less, it's now just a fine.
This year, lawmakers heard from those who favor legalizing it. Supporters said it creates lots of tax revenue in Colorado. They've built a few new schools.
But, opponents told Eyewitness News they were concerned about the message.
"Build money some other way to do it," Windsor Locks resident Patty Drapeau said. "Not jeopardize our children. No, I don't think it's a good idea at all."
Police have their concerns as well. Enfield Chief Carl Sferazza said whatever Massachusetts does, Connecticut bans marijuana for recreational use. Sferazza said drug abuse is also a huge problem and just like alcohol, people will drive under the influence of drugs.
"The fact you can go to Springfield buy marijuana and get high, driving impaired is a violation of our laws and you are putting the public at risk," Sferazza said
If Massachusetts makes recreational use legal, it could become a challenge for police. Authorities said they will have no other choice but to enforce the laws that are in Connecticut.
