The Detroit City Council won't amend a city ordinance to allow possession of small amounts of marijuana and instead will let city voters decide the issue.
The supporters of marijuana decriminalization turned in enough signatures to get the issue on the city's ballot, but also wanted the council to amend the city ordinance to make it legal to possess small amounts of pot.
The council forwarded the issue to the election commission, which has to approve the language for the Nov. 2 ballot..
The initiative would allow anyone 21 and older to legally possess less than 1 ounce of marijuana on private property.
Supporters of the issue gathered 5,750 signatures in May; 3,895 were required and 4,598 were validated.
