Hello,

I'm just descovering lecithin in diverses topics, but I don't find if you have to put it in the oil/butter when making the cannabutter. Or if it's in the recipe after when making edibles, and it just need to be ingested to imrpove the bio availability during digestion ?

:thanks:

It is an emulsifier, for one. It helps bind ingredients together.
I use a Magical Butter machine for my butters, and lecithin is added during that process in the machine.
Here is some information on one of our sponsors site, Royal Queen Seeds, about Lecithin that might give you some insight:

Years ago I was looking for recipes for making a salve/topical which could be used for arthritis and joint pains. Several of them did mention adding lecithin without saying why. Reading up on the general use of lecithin did not help much either.

When I read your message I asked myself two questions. One was "purpose of lecithin in food" and generally it can help in the texture and taste of foods in general and in this case, specifically in edibles.

Then the next question was "purpose of lecithin in cannabutter" and those links suggested that it might help in the way the stomach and intestines absorb the THC, CBD, etc. The thing is, I could not find any definitive explanation or actual testing to see if this was true.

Most of what I see are "studies show" kinds of things on this, and user testimonials. More actual testing needs to be done in larger numbers. Hopefully if cannabis is taken off the federal schedule 1 drug list, this will happen in a much wider scale with funds available for the studies, (I am wanting bioavailability studies to be completed) and give us some meat to chew on.

I have personally made salves and lotions and it works. I am colon cancer free because of concentrated cannabis oil since using only that at as a treatment back in 2014. There is no question in my mind on that. But to tell you in detail scientifically or biologically why.....I get lost in all of that. LOL

Lecithin degrades with heat so it's best to add it after the decarb/infusion steps and then let the combination rest in the fridge overnight before mixing again and then using however you're going to.

It serves to encapsule smaller molecules of the cannabinoids which makes them easier and better absorbed by the body is how I understand it.
