A federal judge sentenced a Richmond criminal-defense attorney and former public defender to two years in prison yesterday for selling marijuana.

Jeremy Clyde Sharp, 35, pleaded guilty in June before U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson to one count of conspiracy to possess and distribute marijuana.

According to court documents, Sharp purchased marijuana from two suppliers starting in the fall of 2004. He started with quarter-pound buys and escalated until his regular purchase was 2 to 3 pounds. On one occasion, he bought 7 pounds.

Sharp used his pickup truck to transport and store the marijuana and proceeds from the sales he made.

Investigators from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the Henrico County police and Virginia Commonwealth University police searched Sharp's Floyd Avenue home in early February. They found the remains of a dismantled marijuana-growing operation.
