A new bill hopes to grow Alabama's economy through industrial hemp. The bill's sponsors think this version of the cannabis plant could be a
new cash crop. The biggest challenge facing the bill may be separating the crop from it's cousin, marijuana.

"The first thing we have to do, and the reason we had the press conference... it's not marijuana," Sen. Paul Bussman, R-Cullman, explained.

"It's like the difference between the poodle and a Great Dane...they are both canines, but they are totally different."

If you're able to get passed it family relation, Bussman wants you to take another look at hemp.

"There are many products that come from this. You have rope, you get clothing, you get building blocks, we get car parts, just a tremendous number of things, including food," Bussman states.

Hemp products sold for more than $600 million nationwide in 2014. Studies also show hemp is better for the environment than cotton
or corn.

"I want to make sure our farmers have everything they have opportunity-wise that everyone in the country has," Bussman said.

Right now 28 states have enacted laws providing for hemp pilot studies or production.
