Southern University has awarded a contract to grow, process and distribute medical marijuana to Advanced Biomedics, whose majority owner is Carencro native and entrepreneur Carrol Castille.
Castille spoke about this opportunity saying, "My team and I are honored and thrilled to have been selected to partner with Southern in this history-making project. This is a project that will provide important funding to the university and ultimately improve the quality of life of thousands of Louisiana residents."
As part of the agreement, Southern will receive $6 million over the next five years.
During that same period of time, Advanced Biomedics will construct a 40 thousand square foot facility in Baker, Louisiana where medical cannabis will be grown, processed, and distributed.
Once phase one of construction is complete in about a year, Advanced Biomedics expects to provide its products to about 1,700 Louisiana patients, which is about half of the state's qualified patient population. By year five, that number is expected to be around 18,000 patients.
The Louisiana Legislature has already approved a limited list of illnesses and ailments that qualify for treatment, and each year, members of the legislature will meet to consider adding further illnesses and problems to the list.
Advanced Biomedics will ultimately employ about 55 people, many of which will be minority hires provided by Southern University and its "Jobs for Jaguars" program.
Southern graduates and graduate students will also be able to take advantage of a job incubator to be constructed at the site. The 11,000 square foot facility will provide space to work for those who are interested in careers in medical cannabis. Members of the Advanced Biomedics team will work hand in hand with these future scientists and business professionals in helping them to navigate the barriers of researching and marketing medical marijuana.
And finally, because Advanced Biomedics realizes that scientists aren't grown overnight, the company will also be partnering with two local high schools. Capital High and Southern Lab High will each receive $50,000 a year to be used to further develop their own agriculture and chemistry programs. In addition, each year twenty $3,000 scholarships will be provided to students who wish to continue their education at Southern University.
