United Hemp Industries will be hosting a Hemp Education Field Day at Mulberry Orchard in Shelbyville on Sunday, August 28 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Guests will have the opportunity to learn about industrial hemp and tour this year's research plots.
United Hemp Industries (UHI) is a hemp processing company licensed through the Kentucky Department of Agriculture to research and conduct on-farm processing in the state of Kentucky. In addition, UHI offers research and development, project management and consulting services to farmers, processors and manufacturers looking to be involved with the Kentucky hemp pilot program.
"It's important for us to familiarize the community with industrial hemp as the pilot program continues to expand," said United Hemp Industries Co-Owner Kirstin Bohnert. "We're very pleased with the outcome of this year's research projects, and look forward to sharing our progress with attendees."
This year UHI partnered with Gajdzik Farms to research several varieties of industrial hemp for various end uses, from animal feed to outdoor furnishings.
"Industrial hemp has the potential to significantly impact the agricultural community in Kentucky, but it is very different from other crops," says David P. Reinhardt, UHI's Director of Development. "There are so many variables in types of hemp, farm operations, processing and end products. The way to become informed is to see hemp in the field and learn from people who are breaking new ground."
Matt and Amanda Gajdzik, who own and operate both Gajdzik Farms and Mulberry Orchard, have planted five acres at their property in Shelbyville this season, their second year in the program.
"There is a very steep learning curve to industrial hemp," says Amanda Gajdzik. "We've learned a lot already, especially this year. We are happy to share what we know with others, to help further the development of industrial hemp agriculture in Kentucky."
The field day is free and guests are encouraged to come early, or stay after, to enjoy the Mulberry Orchard Kitchen and Kentucky Proud Store. Mulberry Orchard is located at 1330 Mulberry Pike, in Shelbyville.
