The medical use of marijuana is a hot topic across the country.
Tired of waiting around on representatives in Nashville and Washington, one local man believes both the federal and state level no longer hear the people, and it's time for a different approach. That's why he's putting forward two petitions on medical marijuana use.
Steve Cooper, a lifelong resident of Knoxville, says he felt it was time to make a dramatic change. Cooper filed two petitions on Monday posing two questions.
The first petition will ask the people of Knox County if they shall amend the Knox County Charter to allow the medical use of marijuana.
The second petition will ask the people of Knox County if they shall amend the Knox County Charter to allow the recreational use of marijuana by persons 21 years of age.
Cooper believes the country has a drug problem, not a marijuana problem.
"Marijuna is medicine. Despite all the propaganda, all the lies, all the laws, it is a medicine. For over eight decades now, we've had the prohibition against the plant and in my opinion, and probably all these people's opinion, it's a failure," Cooper said.
The commission will meet on March 21 to approve his petitions. Cooper believes he'll need 20,000 signatures on both petitions by June 14 in order to qualify to be placed on the November 2016 Knox County ballot. Cooper tells Local 8 News he feels confident he will get the signatures he needs.
