K-Township Modifies Medical Pot Moratorium

The Kalamazoo Township Board has modified a moratorium on medicinal marijuana, and will allow caregivers to continue providing services, just as long as there is only one caregiver at any one address.

One controversial provision will require those caregivers, who can have up to 5 patients, to register their addresses with the police department.

Chief Tim Bourgeois said it is to be sure legal grow operations are not raided.

Residents believe that is not just a violation of the medical marijuana law, but the HIPAA Act.

The moratorium will put a chilling effect on the movement, and make it tougher for patients to find caregivers.

Trustees believe they need 6 months to go through the zoning board to make sure they comply with the provisions of the act.

There was unanimous opposition from the people who spoke and unanimous approval from the Board.

The City of Kalamazoo enacted zoning changes last month that effectively blocked the establishment of dispensaries inside city limits.
