Greetings everyone! I've been lurking here for quite some time picking up tips and pointers while I plan my new grow room, and I thought it was about time I registered so I can contribute whatever I can.
I am building a dedicated growroom from scratch on the second floor of a new workshop building I've been constructing for about a year. For appearances, I am building a 10' x 5' secure locking storeroom above my shop. In reality.....well.....it isn't a very big building and it will be quite discreet.
I am early on in the build and about to start hanging my drywall. I'm installing dedicated ducting that will vent up into the attic space, and am seriously considering a closed air circulation system in the building that will heat it in the colder months. I plan on using a 400 Watt HPS in a sealed hood with forced air ventilation, illuminating a 4' x 4' flowering table that will incorporate a fairly simple flood/drain watering system using common drip irrigation fittings and emitters. The ducting for air in and out is easy to switch with inexpensive parts from Home Depot.
I've focused hard on good insulation and sound-proofing so far in the build in order that I can run this grow as efficiently and quietly as possible. There will be no complaints from neighbors or unusual spikes in electric use.
I am retired, in my late fifties and have survived two bouts with serious cancer since 1998, and I use to relieve the continuing symptoms of many, many surgical procedures. I believe I can build myself a small, very discrete grow room that will easily keep me provided with what I need with a lot less risky than continuing to purchase on the black market.
I am not registered, and will not do so, even though the State I live in has a so-called "medical marijuana law". I have an extremely hard time convincing myself that the best way for me to meet my medical needs is to register with the government. That seems to me to be an very expedient way for the DEA to make a visit to your home some day, and in the Army they refer to that as "putting yourself on report"...but that is another rant for another day.
Glad to be here, and I look forward to continuing to ease my learning curve on what promises to be a very rewarding hobby, in more ways than one.
Nice to meet you all!
