JoJo's Hempy SCROG Bucket C99 Grow Journal - 2015

Hey JoJo your setup looks great.
I read about half but getting really late so will catch up tomorrow.
I just want to say thanks for helping me out also. :thumb:

Thanks for joining! I know there's a lot to go through, but at least it has lots of pictures (maybe too many...)!

Hopefully you get everything straightened out and start a journal of your own!

Update (12 days flower, 67 days old):

Hey gang! So I haven't had much time to water/feed the last few days, so this time was 4 days between feedings, and big Hempy drank about 1 gallon. The runoff is around 915 PPM and I don't have any nute burns on the leaves, so I don't think I'm having any issues feeding every time.

The stretch continues, and I just did a big tuck yesterday. Tucking takes awhile, but the stretch is starting to slow it seems. The nodes are putting on more flowers, so hopefully I don't have to tuck for too much longer. Everything seems healthy, and with all this leaf tucking, the canopy is getting pretty dense!

Do you guys even like the 3 day comparison? I'm thinking of skipping it from here on out, but it's nice to see SOME progress.

As for the others, they are all looking great! I trimmed off all the budsites on the little Hempy that aren't getting much light, and re-LSTed to keep it lower. She should be about done stretching now, as she's a few days ahead of big Hempy.

The only issue I'm having is with the NL breeding girl. Some of the leaves are dying off, and getting odd discolorations. I'll have to look into the symptoms a little more, but she's close to dropping seeds it seems anyway, and that's all I care about. The C99 seems to be progressing a little slower.

As for the clones, we have another 100% rooting success. I took 4 clones as I wasn't sure if I want to do a single 5 gallon SCROG for my next grow, or go with 4X smaller plants. What do you guys think?

1_9_8.jpg

We'll have another update in a few days, stick around!

Your large fan leaf die off is extremely normal at the end of the flower stage. The plant is pushing everything it has into budding out.
I'd go with the single scrog. Only one plant... much easier. Everything looks so awesome. I'm horribly jealous!

Thank you kind sir. I kind of figured that the leaves were just getting used for their energy, I just hadn't seen that kind of discoloration before. I won't sweat it!

I'll probably stick with a single plant for my next grow, as you suggested. I have a question for you though, since you have experience with it. If I grow it in a 1 gallon container with Hempy mix for 6-7 weeks, do you think I could transfer it to the 5 gallon Hempy container? I recall you experimented with "floating" some plants in and out of pots, but I wasn't sure how old the plants were. If I did this, I'd probably keep 2 plants just to be safe!

I suppose worst case, I could take clones at that point and only set myself back a few weeks.

couldn't have said it any better myself.

Whoa now mussh, nothing to be jealous of - you seem to be doing juuuust fine yourself! I'm still waiting for your photo update!

hempy ftw!

from the mouth of hempy himself, "I like to put my rooted clones directly into their final bucket."
the question wasn't meant for me, but it got me thinking.
now as far as a transplant from hempy to larger hempy is concerned, i would be worried about destroying roots that had grown to the water table. im using lava rocks in my 5 gallon and perlite in my 2 gallon. i guess if the perlite dried out quite a bit, it wouldn't be to bad. but the lava rock would be a disaster.

im loving the passive hydro grow. im seeing killer results.

p.s. photo update Tuesday, she is AMAZING.

If you plug the hole and fill the bucket, you can float any plant out of a perlite/vermiculite mix. You kind of end up scooping it out really. A ton of the perlite will transfer... bring it all in one big messy mass to the new home.
But, to be honest, I'm horribly lazy and would never xplant any more.... I just put them in their permanent home as clones. Hell, I've cut clones and placed them in a big bucket with a solo cup over them till they root. One might get a quicker grow, but my lazy gardening precludes it. Mussh hit it on the head.

Wow everything is looking good you have going on! Congratz on the clones. Myself i thought clones was going to be hard. It seems now like its hard to get one not to root lol. Ive done pretty much everything to clones.. even forgot to water, over watered, no lights, no dome, small undesirable cuttings... everything and they still all root lol. Good job on everything!

Question: Why does your flowering LED light look to be blue spectrum? are you doing that to the photos to see better?

Thanks Hunter! I'm not really sure what all the fuss is about cloning either. Granted I've only taken 15-20 clones, and I may have good cloning strains, but I've had 100% success. These ones even got a little cooked, but still made it. It's nice to be on the good side of them rooting!

As far as the LED pictures being bluish - I do change the settings on my camera to make the pictures a little more viewable. I tried post-editing the red pictures, but didn't have much luck. Fortunately I can set the white balance on my point-and-shoot, and get the results you see! It really does make a difference.

Update (15 days flower, 70 days old):

Fed again with full strength nutes, as usual. Growth has been slowing down the last 2 days, so not much more tucking was required. Do you guys think I need to reduce the amount of budsites? Maybe to like one-2 per hole?

Not bad for a little over two weeks in flower..

I realized the other day, I've never shown what I'm feeding them. It's the plain 3-part GH Flora series, pH down (tap is 9.5ish), and some AquaClear (to eliminate the chlorine and chloramine). There's my cheap Dr. something pH meter. I have other stuff put away, but these are the essentials.

GEDC1497.jpg

I also decided to flush the breeding girls. They started using up the fan leaves and didn't seem to be taking many more nutes. I'll give them at least a week or two if I can get away with it. The seeds are still green...

And don't forget the clones! Their roots are getting really long (more than 2" in some cases), so I need to get them into their pots. I just haven't had the time.

That's all folks!

They look great man. Wow they're budding fast. I personally would just leave the buds alone except to defol everything under the screen level sometime in the next week or so. They look like they're all getting space and light. I've never had anything much grow under the screen though- and I've started taking out the ones that are right at screen level as well and grow into the string- at least that where I'm at with defol for the moment, subject to change. :)

hmmmm removing bud sites................... that's like asking me if a woman should get a breast reduction!

as long as they are above the screen, let her fly! looks like you are going to have a full screen.
fantastic work.

Its all in what you want. If you want 100+ popcorn nugs to trim or fewer bigger colas. For me personally, what you have at the canopy is to much even for a smaller HPS light. I dont like small colas and think they are to hard to trim and you get lower quality bud a lot of times because its more leaf. You have a HUGE canopy and soooo many budsites. Even in my past when I did two plant scrogs with my 600 watt I didnt have that many bud sites I dont believe. If you have never grown a scrog like this you will see what i mean at the end. If you were going to minimize budsites you really should have done that before and trained them and trimmed them the way you wanted.

You can only grow as much as the amount your light you have. A good number is 1 gram per draw wattage to get a idea and try and hit. Most 300 watt LED lights only draw around 150 watts or so. You should be expecting around 150 grams(or what ever draw wattage is). So you figure it up split between all those tops to get a idea on how big they will be. This is how I try and figure the size of colas. With that many tops you will only get a few grams out of each top... Its all in what you want out of it! You plant and scrog is beautiful and I would love to see that exact setup with a 1000 watt HPS hahhahah you would kill it in weight. Good luck!

Hunter has a good point. One of my screens I did a major defol on, and tucked and weaved the hell out of it, causing it to grow buds out of every nook and cranny. I just harvested it- It ended up doing pretty well- but trimming all those millions of little buds was exhausting! That said- if it was my screen I'd probably just let it grow anyway and get an idea of how I would want to change things next time.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I'm on the fence about thinning the buds, but part of the reasons for doing this SCROG was to reduce the amount of popcorn buds. Also, since I'll be trimming shaded bud sites under the screen, it probably wouldn't slow down the plant much more to take a few extra... A quick guess on the number of sites above the screen came to ~150, and with my actual draw being 185W, there would be a lot of popcorn!

On the other side of things, like you said Weasel, it might be good to see how this grow goes, and make any changes during the next round.

I could also hang up my other LED side-by-side, but then I may have heat issues... I'll probably make a decision this weekend!

Update (18 days flower, 73 days old):

I fed today per the schedule, except I added a bit of cal/mag (1tsp/gal). I noticed some of the lower fan leaves were getting nutrients pulled from them, and some indicated calcium being used up. They also were getting pale/light green, indicating that nitrogen is being used, but from what I've experienced that's typical during the first few weeks of flowering.

I also went ahead and trimmed off a lot of budsites. I got all the ones below the screen too. You can't really tell in the picture, but a good amount was removed. So sad to see them go, but at least I'll have fewer popcorn buds!

I also had to re-arrange the room so that I could isolate the clone, as I planted it today. I went with the 5 gallon bucket, and it is under a 23W CFL right now. I also got a sneak peak at the root formation since I had a few extra clones. It looks like the area I scraped (about 1" of the stem) is where the roots formed, with none really coming out of the bottom. Interesting!

The breeding girls are doing well. I think they're done growing, I'm just waiting for a few more days before I chop them. I've noticed a good amount of swelling over the last week too! Hopefully I'll get some fully-formed, viable seeds out of them!

1_6_15.jpg

That does it for today.

Happy 4th- it's time to go blow some stuff up!

Im in- Better late than never! Just finished reading from the beginning and really am enjoying this journal. It makes me want to get off my but and start my own journal. I've an OG fire Kush that was given to me (started outdoors, brought indoors) that was way over vegged in my opinion (about 4 months or so) while I was waiting on the funds to order the tent (3'x3'x6') and the light (MarsII-700) and ended up having to do alot of bending and tweaking to get the top of the plant laid down enough to anticipate the stretch as I flipped to 12/12 hours of light and dark periods. Also did a light defoliation but ended up with a truckload of tops creating a canopy that's so thick that hardly any light, if any, is getting through to any undergrowth. So now I have the same problem, or more rather, the same situation that you have...Do I chop and remove many bud-sites to try and focus energy on more larger prominent colas? Or just let it be and go gooey all over the place with a truckload of popcorn size morsels? Decisions decisions? Will probably do what you did and reduce the numbers to something a little more manageable easy to tend to during harvest- Re: trimming for cure. Good luck to you...as if you need it! *wink-wink* You've got a nice lil forest of fuzz going on over there. Im honestly a lil envious and have some catching up to do. Good Growing!

Thanks for joining! You skipped the boring parts anyway, it's flowering time!

You should definitely start a journal! It's not too much work once you get it started, and the awesome people around here can chime in to help you out.

It also sounds like you have a monster on your hands! My guess (though I haven't really heard much about it) is that you do lose a little bit on overall yield when removing all those small budsites, but it probably saves a lot of time trimming. If you're going for quantity think about leaving 'em. If you're about quality/size think about trimming them off. I'm sure I'll still have a sticky mess of popcorn, but I'll learn what to change for next round.
