On April 20th 2015, Timeless Herbal Care and the University of the West Indies made history by planting the first legal ganja plant in Jamaica after 102 years of prohibition. This was the culmination of the work of so many people who braved the odds and made tremendous sacrifices creating this new industry and opportunity for Jamaica. The symbolic ceremonial planting ceremony on the grounds of the University of the West Indies was a watershed moment representing a collaborative effort undertaken by Government, Academia and Corporate interests as well as key stakeholders.
Those present at the historic undertaking included Senator Mark Golding Minister of Justice, Courtney Betty president and CEO of Timeless Herbal Care, Principal of the University Archie McDonald, Mayor of Kingston Dr. Angela Burke and her husband Paul Burke, Jamaica Labour Party representative Delano Seiveright, Richard 'Dicky' Crawford and representatives of the Maroons and Rastafarian community. Also in attendance was Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining Hon. Phillip Paulwell, who also played a decisive role in influencing the outcome of this historic event.
According to Courtney Betty, President and CEO of Timeless Herbal Care: “As a lawyer planting the first legal ganja plant with Minister of Justice Mark Golding was a moment I will always cherish. Minister Golding and I had begun to pave the path for this moment over 2 years ago and to have it materialize is truly fulfilling”.
Timeless and UWI have received the first license to begin to cultivate medical marijuana and to carry out research and development in Jamaica. Of great importance is the establishment of an international centre of excellence for research at UWI. Principal of the Mona campus, Professor Archibald McDonald, assured that the research team will ensure that “the best work is put into development of the medicinal aspect of the industry.”
The research group will focus its attention on chemical profiling of the Ganga strains and the development of target strains and dosages for specific diseases.
According to Senator Golding: “Now that UWI can actually cultivate for research purposes, we can expect that the outcomes of the endeavours will be more profound, and with the economic opportunities that this will bring, we see this as part of what, I hope, will be a transformational industry for Jamaica.”
Timeless and UWI will continue to play a leading role in the development of the medical marijuana industry in Jamaica. Both parties intend to make a significant announcement in 30 days as to specific products and services which will be available in Jamaica and for the international market.
