As the result of a computer malfunction, one thousand Israeli patients who already have permission to acquire legal cannabis are currently unable to acquire their state-approved marijuana, the Ma'ariv reported on Sunday. The mix-up comes a week after Israel's Ministry of Health planned to implement a new computer system with the express purpose of shortening wait times for cannabis licenses, which is almost a textbook example of irony. The undefined bug means that the streamlined process has yet to be implemented.
The amount of Israelis with medical cannabis licenses has grown in recent years, with there now being some fourteen thousand people with licenses. Despite this growth, the number of medical professionals who can prescribe medical marijuana has yet to grow to meet the demand, with only twenty-one doctors in Israel allowed to issue licenses. As such, patients must wait months before receiving official written permission to buy medical marijuana. Likewise, the current process does not provide updates to patients on the status of their request.
The Ministry of Health resolved to implement procedures by which a doctor's recommendation and other necessary medical documentation may be scanned and sent directly to a healthcare provider. The marijuana request can then be sent to a medical doctor for approval. The glitch comes at perhaps the most awkward time that it could, with the Israeli Ministry of Health receiving 2,00 applications last week.
