I've heard this from several people and one source, don't remember what it was so I can't link to it. One guy I was talking grew back in the late 80s, he had 3,500 plants and 3.5 tons harvested, he had pictures and there were just mounds of buds, he and a few buddies of his were sitting around it and were kicked back with the feet inclined on it. Eventually he got busted by some narcs, he had an ounce purse in his jacket. When they brought him to court his offence was dropped since it was his first (3rd) nonviolent fellony offence. The only thing he got convicted for was the ounce he had on him which was a misdemeanor, he got sentinced to 30 days jail time and a several hundred dollar fine. Not bad for growing that much.
