Iowa: The Sick Deserve A Real Discussion On Marijuana

Moral obligation has been brought up many times by those on both sides of the medical cannabis debate. It seems when a matter of the government is debated, the line between right and wrong becomes blurred and one person's moral obligation is very different from that of another's.

Do House members have legitimacy in their arguments on abortion brought back into light by this feud over medical cannabis? ["Stalled medical marijuana bill causes acrimony at Iowa Capitol," April 30.] It really depends on where your morals are. Does the government have a right to shame and prohibit women from receiving an abortion when, in some people's moral perspective, it is none of their business? Or is it a matter of the government's morals to intrude in such a personal way? Does the argument of the legalization of medical cannabis really have anything to do with abortion, House members?

We should stick to the current issue and focus on what's at stake for these Iowans with health problems, in some cases incurable, and give them the respect they deserve: the respect of a discussion, the respect of a vote. House members, wherever your morals may lie, I ask you put aside all personal animosity directed towards the Senate. Debate and allow a vote on medical cannabis for these deserving and suffering citizens, not out of moral obligation, but simply because they are your constituents. They shouldn't suffer because of one person's moral obligation differing from that of another.
