Seattle - Federal investigators say they have broken up a major marijuana-smuggling operation that used hidden compartments in tractor-trailer rigs to smuggle thousands of pounds of pot and
millions of dollars across the Canadian border.
Eleven men were charged in U.S. District Court in Seattle today with conspiracy to import and distribute marijuana and conspiracy to launder money.
Charging papers allege the operation was led by 38-year-old Long Van Nguyen, of Tacoma, and 36-year-old Nghia Pham, of Auburn.
Investigators say the marijuana was brought south from Canada hidden in secret compartments in tractor-trailer rigs. Couriers allegedly dealt the drugs in multi-pound quantities in public locations such as stores, hotels, restaurants and even outside a public library.
Agents seized more than $1.4 million from one defendant who was taking the money to a storage
locker in Kirkland. Investigators say the money was eventually taken back to Canada or laundered through the purchase of homes and other assets in the Seattle area.
