A Philadelphia man was charged Sunday with passing 10 deflated balloons containing marijuana to an inmate he was visiting at a state prison in Schuylkill County after the inmate tried swallowing the balloons, police said.
Devin Y. Latimore, 26, was charged with drug and contraband charges when he sneaked them into Mahanoy State Prison in Mahanoy Township about 11 a.m. Sunday, state police at Frackville said.
While visiting with the inmate, whom police did not identify, Latimore ''transferred'' the 10 balloons to him, police said. They did not say how the transfer took place, but said the inmate then tried to swallow the marijuana-filled balloons before being stopped by prison officials.
Latimore was taken to Schuylkill County Prison, where he was arraigned via video conference by District Judge Carol Pankake of Tremont on charges of contraband, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, and possession of and possession with intent to deliver drug paraphernalia.
Pankake set bail at $25,000 and sent Latimore to county prison.
The inmate was not immediately charged, so police did not release his name. They said the investigation is continuing.
