At Northwest Patient Resource Center, a medical marijuana dispensary in Seattle, Washington, various strains of medical marijuana and hundreds of products infused or made with cannabis, line the shelves. Registered medical marijuana users walk in and select the treatment of their choice, as long as they present the proper paperwork and a form of identification.
It is access that many card-carrying medical marijuana users in Alaska say they would like to see in the state. Alaska does not have any dispensaries since selling medical marijuana is illegal.
Dispensaries, collectives and access points in Washington state, all have medical marijuana in common, though many of them are operated differently. Some do not have products for sale, but accept donations instead. While others, like Northwest Patient Resource Center, operate like any other business. Owner John Davis calls his model transparent. He says elected officials and law enforcement walk through all the time.
"You won't get respect from your community from anyone unless you are operating like a business," said Davis.
His medical marijuana dispensary is one of more than 100 in Seattle alone- they now outnumber Starbucks Coffee shops in The Emerald City.
With extra-tight security, including high-definition cameras, Kevlar walls, and three safes to store his bulk inventory, it may sound like an air-tight business model except for one liability.
"The thing about it is that all marijuana is illegal federally. So we have our issues," he said. "but working within the state model I really aim for compliance."
