On January 5, 2009, Democrats assumed majority control of the Wisconsin
State Assembly, marking the first time since the mid-1980's that both
houses of the Wisconsin Legislature and Governor's office were in
Democratic Party control.
While Republicans blocked every attempt to pass medical cannabis
legislation, a friendlier reception is expected from the new Democratic
majority. With a strong effort and good support from Wisconsin citizens
and groups, passage of medical cannabis legislation in Wisconsin is very
possible in the 2009-2010 session. The passage of Michigan medical
cannabis legislation puts a medical cannabis state squarely on our
border, with their program commencing in early April 2009.
In the Wisconsin legislature, this session's bill has a likely lead
sponsor in Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Madison), who along with former Rep. Frank
Boyle (D-Superior) was the lead sponsor of prior session's bills,
including last session's Assembly Bill 550, the Jacki Rickert Medical
Marijuana Act.
Right now, it is important to call or write your state lawmakers and ask
them to support legislation this session. Introduce yourself and stay in
touch. Ask friends, family and colleagues to contact their legislators
too. Demonstrate that the strong support of Wisconsinites is also deep.
To find out who your state Assembly Representative and State Senator are
visit: Who Are My Legislators?
(Who Are My Legislators?) Or call the
toll-free Legislative Hotline at 1-800-362-9472 and they can tell you
who represents you and connect you to their offices.
Another great way to help is to write letters to the editor of your
local paper in support of medical cannabis.
Stay tuned for our next update.
