I'm a noobie Cannabis grower but a Botanist trained

Yep, earned a BS in Botany many moons ago and though I didn't go into the field, I've made it a hobby through gardening and helping others.

Anyway, my State finally approved Medical Marijuana and is now going through its baby steps in setting up its rules and regs (a little to slowly for many of us). Since I'm on a Disability, a limited income, and my health plan will not pay a dime towards MedMar, I'm going to have to find a less expensive method of obtaining it, especially if it does work for me.

It's funny, they'd rather spend thousands of dollars buying narcotic pain meds, such as Fentanyl for me, but won't pay for MedMar, a cheaper alternative. Bizarre, but true. So for now, I thought I'd try my hand at cultivating two plants, just to see if I could accomplish that goal.

In early May my husband and I visited Spain. There we passed a Marijuana Co-op shop. We stopped to peruse their wares and I saw a display for seeds. All different types. I was amazed; you see I grew up during the late sixties early seventies. Back then there were only three types of grass - home grown, Hawaiian, and Jamaican. Weed was named by where it was grown, there were no strains, no varieties.

So I asked the clerk for a recommendation, something for pain, and something fresh. I didn't want old, dead seeds (In April 2014 we visited Amsterdam and picked up 10 seeds from a flea market vendor, for ten euros - not one grew.) The clerk suggested a pack of Sweet Afghani Delicious, four seeds for €18. He guaranteed them, said if they didn't grow to contact the company for replacement.

We brought them home and I planted one seed on May 20th, the second two weeks later on June 4th. Both sprouted on the third day.

When each hit four weeks of age (and after hardening them off outside) I transplanted them directly into my veggie garden. They're both doing very well. The first plant is now on its eight set of leaves, and busy producing secondary leaves below.

So now I'm trying to decide whether to prune, tie down, or FIM.

I'm leaning toward tying down to keep the plants below six feet, the height of my fence. But since I have two plants, I could try a different method with each one to see if one way is better then the other.

All I know is I still have a lot to learn. I know nothing about Cannabis cultivation, how the plants grow, how this particular variety grows. One place said they mature in 60 - 65 days, I find that hard to believe when growing outdoors.

And they're growing in a good area, they get direct sunlight for most of the day. The soil they're in is mostly clay, but for the last 12 years we've been working into it lots of compost including bushels upon bushels of autumn leaves rototilled in each Spring. We don't use any chemicals nor pesticides, chemical ones that is - I prefer to grow our plants organically and it's paid off.

I'm hoping to get a decent crop of medical marijuana that will help me get off of fentanyl. If I don't have to depend on that narcotic, it will be worth every drop of sweat, every minute of my time spent in my attempt to harvest something I can use.

Oh, BTW, I'm so used to narcotics at this point, that they don't, and have never produced any sort of euphoric effect. Even during that visit to Amsterdam in 2014 we bought a Hash Brownie and split it. My husband go high, me? I felt nothing, absolutely nothing.

Here's a photo of my girls -

You seem to have developed very high tolerance. Most likely this will translate into high threshold for THC too. Maybe bubble hash or concentrates will do the job for you.

I know I must have a high tolerance by now, being prescribed Fentanyl and Oxycodone for going on 17 years will have that effect. But even when I was first placed on Fentanyl it never made me high, just sleepy. Before it I had been on Ultram/Tramadol for years, until that just stopped working. Even so my Docs have always approached pain control via a combination of methods.

I've been on antidepressants, antiseizure meds like Depakote and Zonegran, Nerve pain meds like Gabapentin/Neurontin, and anti-inflammatory meds like Voltaran, Naproxen, and now Celebrex. Been to get epidural injections, used TENS units, Physical Therapy, massage, acupuncture, and? None really worked, while some made the pain worse.

My main diagnosis is Fibromyalgia, and to get that took about three years of visiting doctors. It wasn't until a saw a Doctor who specialized in Diagnostic Dilemmas (like TV's Dr. House), that they finally came up with Fibromyalgia. Now for fibromyalgia they recommend lots of exercise, but I have other medical problems that prohibit exercising. There's degenerative disc disease, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, endocrine related bone problems, shoulder + knee + hip joint problems, hormone deficiencies, etc. Fifteen meds taken daily, plus another five more taken when needed.

My Doctor knows I want off of the fentanyl, but won't recommend MedMar, says not enough studies. He said to find a new Pain specialist to get evaluated. I called up the one that gave me the epidural injections back in 2009 - 2011. They gave up on me when the realized the injections weren't helping Fibromyalgia pain. Well, I went through a thirty minute phone interview just to set up an eval appointment. They said that their intake person would review my info and get back. A week later they did, I was told they couldn't help me. I asked for a reason, they said they don't give out reasons. I bitched, said I just wanted an evaluation, nothing more. They said Sorry.

Other places, when they hear I'm on fentanyl, always presume I'm a junkie looking for more, not someone looking to get off of it. You wouldn't believe the way I've been by pain docs, by pharmacy clerks and especially by pharmacists.

Arrrgggh! Makes me scream.

Anyway, my girls are beginning to skyrocket. We've had plenty of rain this past week and whoosh! There they go.

Yesterday I examined each one closely. Found an insect invader curled in a leaflet near the bottom of my eldest, Mary. It was a small, rather fast caterpillar. I nipped its residence leaflet off the plant and used the nonpoisonous organic Boot method to be rid of it.

(Boot method of killing insect invaders - drop insect on hard ground, descend booted foot upon said invader producing organically enriched protein infused smear. Wipe boot on grass. Alternatively known as "Giving the Boot".)

Also found tiny spiderlike bug carefully tending her egg sack. I know spiders can be beneficial, but this one I didn't recognize, so I gave her, and her egg sack, the boot.

That was it, no other invaders, no other signs of bugs. While examining the plants I noticed the secondary shoots were also growing fast. Some were more then 6 inches in length.

Now I didn't top or FIM or LST (whatever they mean), but I did want to try something. For the Mary plant I tried tying over the main stem. Did that and saw a few of the lowest secondary shoots were still shaded. Ah, time to try cloning.

Got out my rooting hormone, took four cuttings, dipped them after getting them ready, and then placed them in jiffy pots. Now they're in a sheltered, brightly lit spot, and should in a few days produce roots - viable clones.

Now this variety is called Sweet Afghani Delicious Fast Version. It's non-autoflowering, supposed to grow short sweet plants. I'm hoping they're under five foot in height.

And they're supposed to be ready for harvest in very early September. I certainly so, I have to be away from my home for 2.5 weeks. If they're not ready by 9/6 I'm not sure what to do. Would giving them an extra three weeks be that detrimental?

How fast do these mature?

How fast do these mature?

I've had Afghani strains finished by the second week in August. Others have taken until late September. It's hard to tell. Like other plants, some ripen earlier than others.

There's degenerative disc disease, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, endocrine related bone problems, shoulder + knee + hip joint problems

If you're into alternative medicine, add food grade Diatomaceous Earth to your diet. A tablespoon in a glass of water everyday will do wonders for joint pain. It's like drinking very fine sand. Use a straw to chug it down fast and you'll be feeling a lot less pain.

Diatomaceous Earth? Food grade? Really?

I'll look it up. I see new Pain docs next week. I'll interview three be f ore I choose. I'll ask about the earth too.

Oh, my plants are still growing like crazy. I nipped the terminal bud on t :) e one I bent over. Both still look in vegetative stage. I have a few questions to the Sweet Seeds people, waiting to hear back.

If the plants smell this much now, what will they smell like when Flowering?

Hope things are going well for you Koren.

I have my B.Sc. in Environmental Biology and I did a couple Botany courses so I figured I'd put it into practice. I recently started growing it for my back and anxiety. Things are progressing toward legality here in Canada to the point where the police don't bother with personal amounts anymore.

I'm not sure, but I think I may be accepted to get an MMJ card soon. People have been telling me that I can get it at a dispensary with my Blue Cross, so I'm going to have to look into that.

I have a White Widow (plus a bunch more) growing out by the front door and I've been FIMming it to the point where it looks like a bush. I may have to pinch a couple more stems before the fall to keep it below the lattice, not that that's a bad thing. I've already taken four cuttings off it for clones and I'll probably get a couple more before the budding starts.

Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and put in my two cents worth. Here's my baby:

Looks good!

My two girls have grown. The younger, uncut/unpruned plant will be four feet tall tomorrow. The one I tried to bend over, then cut the terminal is so bushy. Both are still in vegetative stage. So much for 60-65 day maturity!

I did plant two clones I took off my plants. They've rooted well and were planted in garden last week. Haven't done much growing though. I have two more clones almost ready now.

The first two do show preflowers, and they're both females like they should be. That the good part of buying feminized seeds. You do get girls.

Since I'm prescribed opioids, I can't test positive for marijuana. So this week I have to remember to use gloves when checking them. And once they flower, I'll have to wear a mask. It will be worth it for when I get off these meds. I just have to find the right pain specialist, one that believes in MM.

I know what you're saying about the opiates. I've never had to take them for long-term usage, but from my experience with morphine for my back that it only takes a few days to start building up a tolerance to it. And I'm pretty sure the next step after that would be dependence.

I have eight cuttings from my White Widow in pots now and as soon as they start to show signs of growth I'm going to put them right into 12/12 to see what happens. That's the good thing about doing your own clones... they're free. So if one's experiment doesn't pan out, well, no big loss. Biology at its finest!

I've been on opioids for over sixteen years. Because of my other meds, I haven't really built up a tolerance. In 2001 I used the 100 mch patch. In 2008 I went down to the 75 patch, but we added in short acting Oxycodone, up to 90mg/day. Now it's 2017. I still use the same patch, and use 75mg to 90 (rarely) Oxycodone tabs.

I've been stable, and only sometimes get too much breakthrough pain.

I had wanted to use Medical Marijuana for breakthrough, and to lower the fentanyl dose, but Federal guidelines for prescribing opioids prevent prescribing them to people who test positive for "illicit" drugs, i.e. marijuana - even if it's legal in one's State.

Crazy.

Oh, my two plants are doing very well. The youngest, kept au naturale, is now over four feet tall.

I placed Chives (in pots) under each one to help repell spider mites and bugs. It's worked so far. Check my gallery.

Those are some heavy duty meds. And I was actually thinking the same thing an hour ago when I picked up a bottle of Tylenol-1s with 8mg codeine for the wife. As for the Fentanyl and Oxy, I've heard some horror stories about that stuff.

I can sort of see the reasoning for the guidelines, but it's just too black-and-white. This is a situation with a wide grey area, and they're assuming a lot about a person with nothing to back them up. On the positive side of things for myself though, I think I'm going to be getting my MMJ prescription next month. At least that's the way it sounded when I had my consultation yesterday.

I don't have any four-foot tall plants yet, but I have a two-footer with a whole load of stems, And a few that are smaller for now will be big bushes by fall. Plus the usual couple of small ones in my growroom. I'll have to keep chives in mind for next year; maybe even plant them in the same pot. Although I must say that my babies are extremely healthy, except for the three that didn't get transplanted into soil with fish compost. Those plants will have to get their nitrogen from external sources. But today was my first day back to work after a week vacation and I made sure I brought home a bucket of it today.
