Gov. Bruce Rauner has chosen to put politics before patients. By having the Illinois Department of Public Health deny the eight conditions that the Medical Cannabis Advisory Board approved to be added to the list of debilitating conditions for the Medical Cannabis Pilot Program, this administration has turned their back on veterans suffering from PTSD, those with autism as well as many Illinoisans suffering from various forms of pain. Approving those conditions would have given hope to thousands of residents who are currently suffering and not getting the relief they need from conventional medicines.
While medical cannabis has only been available for a few months, patients are already praising this natural medicine that does not come with a lengthy list of side effects. Many patients, both those enrolled in the program and those who continue to medicate illegally, know that cannabis can improve their quality of life, reduce their pharmaceutical intake and provide positive results. Why then are we overly cautious with allowing our veterans to have access to this? It is tragic and unpatriotic to deny those who have bravely served our country from legally accessing this medicine.
I thought Gov. Rauner was trying to help the economy in Illinois and now he has become a roadblock for the medical cannabis industry, which has already invested millions of dollars and created jobs all over the state. Gov. Rauner should embrace the cannabis industry and see how successful recreational cannabis is in the states that have it. Plus, if recreational cannabis is good enough for our nation's Capitol, it is good enough for Springfield and the entire state.
