Illinois is about one year into its experiment with legalized medical marijuana. One change since the program began is that doctors no longer have to recommend their patient try cannabis.
That's something that had made physicians wary. Some patients reported a struggle finding a doctor willing to sign off. Now the law says physicians just have to certify that a patient is under their care, and that the patient in fact has a qualifying condition.
President of the Illinois State Medical Society, Doctor Thomas Anderson, says his organization has no position on the change, or on the topic of medical marijuana in general.
"Because we have doctors within the organization who feel like it is a value drug in certain settings, we have doctors in the organization who feel like it's a useless substance that doesn't even belong on the shelf with other medications."
But the society did just update its legal guidelines, a reference to help doctors stay in comply with Illinois' law.
