Lincoln - A Lincoln police officer and her husband have been accused of growing marijuana in their basement.
Police Cpl. Diana R. Short, 45, and her husband, John, 41, were arrested Thursday on several marijuana-related charges. Both were jailed Thursday in lieu of posting $2,500 each.
Each was charged with: unlawful manufacture of marijuana and unlawful manufacture of marijuana with intent to deliver, both Class 3 felonies; and unlawful production of a cannabis sativa plant, a Class 4 felony, according to a statement released by the Logan County Sheriff's Department.
She also is charged with official misconduct "because, even though she was off duty, police officers are prohibited at all times from trafficking in illegal drugs," said Logan County State's Attorney Tim Huyett said in a press statement.
The drug charges are Class 4 felonies and carry possible prison terms of up to three years and fines up to $50,000.
The charges stem from a search of the Shorts' home by an Illinois State Police drug task force early Wednesday.
The police department and city attorney's offices have begun the process of suspending the officer. She has worked for the department seven years and recently was promoted from patrolman to corporal.
Huyett said he regretted the situation but added the charges show "that law enforcement, though they may have allegiance for one another, will not accept wrongdoing of this magnitude."
