i got a homie that swears up and down that you can grow your pot plant horizontal, by simply tying a sting around the top when its about 13 inches and then tacking the string to the ground... should i try it, or is it bullshit?

Yes, you can train MJ along a horizontal trelis. You'd esencially be using the same techniques as a scrog grow. There's a great post on scrog by hardhat. Just do a search for scrog. It was developed before HID came along to use w/fluoros. It works best for clones, or femish seeds though. It's a very interesting consept (and a good read) and one that anyone using all fluoros or low wattage HID should seriously consider. I'm going to try scrog w/my next grow next summer.

I've done it.
The main reason was stealth, so from the air it didn't look like pot.
The plants looked weird. The branches grow from the sun side of the main stem. They look like small plants themselves.
I did this for 5 years. One year I even grew the plant in a horizontal "S" shape.
The down side is it makes it easier for small animals and insects to munch on the tender new growth.
And of course it's more labor intensive.
I used croquet hoops (anyone remember croquet?) to train the plants sideways.

One of the best plants I've ever had was from some Hawaiian seeds I had. On the first transplant to outdoors I accidentally put a seedling in sideways. Not sure if I stepped on it or what. but it grew to about 8 feet long and I just kept it tied down about a foot off the ground. it had like 30 colas. I think about her just about every day. LOL

Tying down or tipping is a effective method used to increase yields and or give the plant a low profile so detection is difficult. Note tying down does not guarantee improved yields, the strain used will play a significant factor. Certain strains prefer to "creep" similar to a ground cover, e.g. Mothership.
