HPS light height

How far away (feet) should my plants be from the hood? -thanks:allgood:

If you were willing to do a little reading on this same page, you'll see that this question has been address many times before. Start at 30 iinches, and slowly work your way down to about 18-20 inches. Judge it w/the back of your hand too. If your hand feels too hot there after a few minutes, it's gonna be too hot for your plants too.

yeah sorry I thought this was a dumb question just needed to know, thanks.

I have one of those cooled hoods that never gets very hot, and my plants have actually hit the 430w hps hood. They do crisp and die within 1" of the glass, but anything further seems to do fairly well. I'm managing to keep everything LST within an inch or lower, and am very happy with the results so far. Heh, we'll know absolutely in 4 weeks because I"ll have the first-cure buds at a decent smoking point by then...

Does the wattage matter in relation to height? I am running a 250w HPS system with normal bat-wing reflector. I have the tops of the plants a little over a foot, I would say about 14"-16" away from the lights. I am also running a small fan and it doesn't seem to be too hot for them at all as I have tested it with my hand. Should I move the light closer, farther away or just leave it where it is? Thanks.

Thanks Growing Slow. It is probably closer to being only a foot away from the plants than the 14"-16" I stated earlier. I will have to measure it is what it comes down to I guess. Also, I just put them under it yesterday. The fan is also hooked up to a seperate timer than the light and it turns on/off every 2 hours. 2 hours on, then 2 hours off. It really doesn't seem too hot at all and if I could move the light a little closer I would imagine it would saturate them with more light and that would be better so long as it is not too hot.

Still need MYLAR! :laughtwo:

Also, I am growing all organic and I want to get some Bat Guano feritlizer that is high in phosphorus. This is what Soma uses and he says he makes a "tea" out of 100grams of Guano to 2 liters of water, and then mixes half a liter of the tea to 10 liters of water with neutral PH. This is the only fert he uses and his plants are simply amazing. If I am sssuming correctly, he simply takes the guano and puts it into hot water to break it down. If I am wrong on that one, please someone correct me, because he did not describe the making of this "tea" in detail. I have been having great success feeding them a light mix of water and fish emulsion every 3-5 days during their veg period, but now that I have moved onto flowering I feel I need something a little stronger and more geared towords budding.

I have worked with only floros to bud before and had less than desirable results. I am hoping that with my new HPS system I will do better right off the bat.

About the Guano Tea, if I knew Soma, I would indeed ask him. But I was only going off the information in the Soma issue of a High Times magazine I have. If I knew Soma, I would surely ask him for some NYC Diesel seeds you can bet on that!

The fan is for airflow in the room only. I currently have nothing for ventillation due to the expense but I plan on thinking of something later. Also, smell is not an issue at all. I am free to grow in my house as well as the fact that they are in my basement, where the smell and the hum of the light bothers no one.

Yeah thats what I did for the fan for airflow, $12 at Home Depot. Maybe I will get another to vent the room too.

Yeah, Soma of Soma seeds. The man! If I could grow any plant in the world it would be his Somango. :adore:

Oh yeah! For one time in my life my laziness has helped a person. This thread does have some purpose lol.

When I got my HPS, I went looking for this thread. Actually you deserve rep points for that!:allgood:

sunsystem.com has some good hps lights try them.

YOu don't need a whold light system for air cooling, you just need one of the hoods with hookups on each end for intake and outflow air. you clamp ducting on the ends of the hood, attach one end to a fan and it sucks air through.

The only problem with mine is because it is enclosed with a glass barrier and the glass holds dust. LOL I have to dust it often or I lose lumens. :)

I had mine about 1' away from the plant and it was ok, but I also had a fan running on high right next to the plant at all times. With the fan on and the AC on it stayd around 75, on a hot day it got up to 80. With the fan off it only got up to 100 I know thats not good for a plant, unless your trying to stress it at the end. It worked alright for me.
