it can work but it's sure not advisable. good chance the bulb fries at start up. it would blow it up immediately on the old magnetic ballasts, you might get a few minutes out of it on a digital lol

Hi all its working fine ive been using it for 4 weeks now no noise on start up i had a dodgy bulb before it used to emit a high pitched squeal on start up
Works fine. I've run a 250w bulb at 400w at the end of the cycle and notices it first when I got burns more on one side than the other.
It didn't blow the bulb but the spectrum becomes all wrong. Running a 250w, 400w, or 600w watt bulb in a adjustable ballast is what they were intended for, to be able to ramp up and down light intensity according to plant size and response.
A 600w bulb running at 400w is not as effective as a 400w running at 400w.
