How many plants?

So I'm looking for some input from the seasoned growers around here. How many plants should I successfully be able to flower with a 250 watt HPS? I had 4 going 12/12 under it and although they had to be cut prematurely they didnt seem all that dense. Was 4 plants too much for 250 watts? The spot is 3'wX2'dX6'h.

sounds like about 50 watts per sqft, minimum for veg.
I like to flower with at least 80 watts per sqft.

So to grow 4 plants again I should supplement the amount of light I have then?

I would, get at least a 400, if not a 600, to cover 6 sqft(3x2)

Or cut your GR dimensions down to 1/2 or a tiny bit bigger and make sure it is shaped in the same way of the footprint that the light casts when you turn it on (likely rectangular) and that your walls are painted FLAT bright white (titanium is best) or covered in mylar so that you'll have the best reflectivity possible for the light that you do have.
