How big is yours?

Hey all, just wanted to reach out with a question about enclosure size. I've got 3 plants on the go this year (check my journal "Adventures in Growing") and I have a choice, I can set up my open top enclosure for 4 X 4 X 3 high = 16 sq. ft. or 3 X 3 X 4 high = 9 sq. ft. I'm using a 38" diameter reflector with a 1000 W HPS bulb with adjustable height. What size would you suggest is better?

With 1000w, you need to keep it about 18 inches from your plant, assuming adequate circulation and ventilation. Either is a small space for 1000w HID. They make a lot of heat.

Agreed, with the 1000w I don't need much heat, that's one reason the top of my enclosure is open, it doesn't let the heat accumulate, and convection lets it rise and keep the whole garage warm. The question has more to do with the square footage of the enclosure vs 3 flowering plants.

You can easily grow 3 in a 3x3,but if you'd like them to get a
little wider, then go with the 4x4.
I grow in a 2x2,and two plants fit, just not very well...

Bigger is always better. You don't have to use all the room but it is there if you need it. The 1000 watt has plenty of penetration so you can grow them taller if you want.

I personally like my plants on the taller side. Plenty of room under the canopy for air circulation.
