The 12th annual Hemp Hoe Down continues today at Elk Creek Resort near Sturgis, bringing with it live music, hemp products and seminars on the benefits of hemp.

The festival was started 12 years ago to educate people about hemp and to let them know that legalizing hemp does not mean legalizing marijuana.

"There are so many people who misunderstand hemp as marijuana," said Jaci Kennison, a Hemp Hoe Down co-producer. "It is so beneficial and specifically here in South Dakota because we have so many ag communities. Industrial hemp can be so beneficial. We're trying to create a campaign where we could get the community members to back industrial hemp. It does not mean we're legalizing marijuana."

Various bands will take the stage today at the Hemp Hoe Down, and between acts, organizers will speak about the benefits of industrial hemp. In addition, hemp gear, hemp food and hemp beer brewed at Crow Peak Brewery in Spearfish will be available. The film "Hempsters Plant the Seed" will be shown daily.

"We want to show the versatility of the plant and remind people that it's not marijuana," Kennison said.

This is the first year a free Sunday session will be offered. There will be a question-and-answer session about hemp that day, as well as and live music, Kennison said.

"It won't be anywhere near the intensity that the younger crowd usually gets," Kennison said of the Sunday program.

According to Kennison, organizers hope to gain momentum for a federal bill that would legalize hemp.

Elk Creek Resort is at Exit 46 off Interstate 90 in Piedmont. For more information and a schedule of events, go online to hemphoedown.com.
