hi, new to using medical MJ. trying to find some good and easy recipes cuz i hate smoking them. if anyone has any "non smelly" methods of cooking. i know there's going to be some smell, but just not looking for the "alert the neighbor" kinda smell :):thankyou:

I've made all the butters, tinctures, gummy bears brownies and cookies. I've even made bread and then made that into bread pudding!

My crock pot heats at 190 degrees. That is the temperature I prefer for infusing mm into alcohol. A few canning lids in the bottom turn it into a double boiler. The level of the hot water in the crockpot must be even with the alcohol inside the jar to distribute the heat safely. I use 2 quart mason canning jars per fifth and put one cup of ground trimmings (one cup of ground dried herb is two ounces) with half of a fifth of (everclear 190 proof is better but 151 rum works and has a nice flavor, 150 proof vodka works as well) in each jar. I stir with a washed and dried bamboo skewer. once it is at temperature it only takes about ten minutes. There is also a cold method that takes about 6 weeks. Thermometer is a must have. EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE I have not had problems, but i use a crockpot and my stove is a flat top with no burners. Doing this over a gas stove would be insane imho. The finished product is dispensed via eyedropper into coffee, tea, soda, milkshakes, mixed drinks, recipes. does not take much so the alcohol is not really an issue but IT IS STRONG tasting so experiment. This process is not smelly when done cold, and is only stinky for a half hour or so if using the hot method. The stink is more alcohol then herb I think? You could make some home made kaluah at the same time and blame the smell on that if it came up?

I use the same crockpot for making butter. two cups of water and a pound of unsalted butter heat in the crockpot on low till melted then add a cup (or two) of your herbage ( I always use ground but other opinions exist as to the best method) let simmer at 190=200 degree range for 8-10 hours. devise a straining system keeping in mind that the butter/water mix is hot as a skillet that makes water dance. I lay my cheesecloth in a strainer that sits in my canning funnel (wide mouth made to fit into canning jar) that I fit into my blender lid that is on the blender vessel. just get it through the cheesecloth into something clean (no plastic) without burning yourself and you win. put on some cloth gloves and then some rubber gloves over that before you start. at the end you have a cheesecloth full of green glob that you must press/squeeze/twist all the butter out of, there is a lot in there still. You will see the water and butter not wanting to hang out together, stick it in the fridge (covered so you dont drop crumbs into it) overnight and the next day stick a fork into the butter and pull it out. leaving the water behind. use for cooking. The nasty looking stuff on the butter is the best part! I trim it off and use it for a personal batch of oatmeal peanut butter chocolate chip cookies.

All of that fancy crap is good but I honestly prefer to-

a: make brownies with Ghirardelli Ultimate fudge brownies as directed then add 1 cup ground herb that is mixed with olive oil to match the viscosity of the brownie mix. Then I add a cup or two of nestles morsels. If I am really feeling decadent I replace most of the water with chocolate syrup. cook at 325 degrees, not 350 as directed, dont want to burn the trichomes. Needs a little extra time for cooking but be careful not to overcook. Don't have anything planned, start slow. Eat just a little at first, I have seen parties ruined with this recipe. (everyone fell asleep) This can be an overwhelming body high couch lock.

b: place two sticks of unsalted butter in a skillet or saucepan over low heat. Mix in one cup of ground herb. be careful not to overheat but let it cook a bit. (190 if you have a thermometer) . after a simmer I let mine set a bit to harden up enought to roll up in wax paper about the size of the original stick so I can cut some off for cooking as needed. Keep in freezer if you have excess. can be used in any recipe calling for butter or oil.

GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND and you can find more detailed instructions, youtube videos and a crapload of other information that I am way too high to sit and type. google keywords are cannabutter cannacooking cannawhatever. My friend that makes the best gummies I have seen and I started a video for gummies but it was on my birthday and we were way way too far gone. at least I was. So maybe we will get our shit together and do the series we want to do. Good luck experimenting and have fun!!

edit: you can use bud instead of the trimmings if you dont have access, let it sit out for a few days to make sure its very dry. obviously it wont take as much, about 25% i am guessing. And when I say trimmings I am not talking about vegetive state prunings, but the manicure trimmings and lower branches with less developed buds.

I went to PB Junior High back in the '70s, lived on Diamond street across from the rec center, if you know Pacific Beach at all. Used to ride my skateboard down to the boardwalk then cruise all the way to the bay. Is Blacks Beach still up by La Jolla? :high-five:

Wildweed, I'm in North County, don't get to PB much unless I go shopping :)
Do have a friend who used to have the same Skateboard routine as you did though. He says it was "awesome"!!!!
Thank you for the recipes. I'm trying out some truffle recipes tonite (kinda like a trial and error thing). kinda did the "best of all recipes" thing, let's see if it works! Will definitely let you know how it goes.
As for the Alcohol recipe OH MY GOD!!! I had a really really fun night last night. and pain free, nausea free, bp was good too!
Thank you so much!

:welcome:to the :420: Family.:woohoo:
We are here to Spread Cannabis Awareness across the Universe SAFELY. While making Canna Butter is safe, using alcohol is extremely dangerous and if done wrong you could die or be burnt beyong recognition please leave this to experienced people who are willing to risk the dangers. Keep it safe and Green!!

uh oh! Wingman, Thank you for the advice. guess i got lucky!!

It's all good charshobish, I am not the MMJ Police. (lol) I just know the dangers of Manufaturing BHO, Grain alcohol extracts and some other beauties that while fantastic Medicine when done safely and correctly, can injurn and maim those who are unexperienced and ill equipped for these dangers. Just trying to Spread Cannabis Information and look out for you before anything bad could happen!!

Hey wildweed, I've not made tinctures yet, but was getting ready to try, so doing a little reading.

Most of the instructions I've come across for making tinctures are pretty much just combining the ground bud with the alcohol in a jar, and coming back in a few hours, days or weeks and straining...some agitate some don't.

But I don't understand heating the mixture...I guess it could be to evaporate off alcohol and concentrate the essence of the plant, but since heat degrades THC why bother? Couldn't you just use a higher bud to alcohol ratio for the same outcome? I remember reading about a cold tincture method where the whole process was done in the freezer, if I'm correctly recalling, specifically to preserve the THC.

Just curious on your thoughts since you use the crockpot. :thumb:

I like cold infusions. Takes much longer, several months is good. It is way, way safer. I make a batch and pour off the top as needed until I can't pour it off without plant material mixing in, then filter it out with cheesecloth. I have an old cider press works great for extracting the last bit.

Heating the alcohol allows this process to speed up exponentially. BUT IT IS VERY DANGEROUS. Open gas flames or even an electric element can ignite spilled alcohol. Heated alcohol ignites amazingly easily. I have a glass top stove with no exposed elements and have had catastrophic spills (explosions? certainly more then a boil over.) that would have ignited. The smell and fumes are powerful and if they had ignited I am not sure I would have survived. I can't stress enough DON"T DO THIS unless you know what your doing. My family made water ski handles for O'brien back in the early '70s and I learned about working with solvents back then. Did I mention this is dangerous? ok so the reason this doesn't hurt the THC is because you don't let the temperature go above 190-200deg. I put canning lids in the bottom of my electric crockpot then fill with water so the water is the same level as the alcohol in the jars. If the levels aren't the same the glass tries to be different temperatures and they can break which is a real drag and dangerous. I use a thermometer in the water in the crockpot and one in the jar with the alcohol. I use a bamboo skewer that has been rubbed to make sure no splinters come off it to stir with. in a few hours you will notice a glossy cover in the jars and the alcohol will have turned dark. Then you can still let it sit as long as you can stand, the alcohol keeps it all safe. Did I mention heating alcohol is dangerous?

I have heard about various freezing methods as well, the way I understood it was if you freeze the leaves before you grind to powder it helps keep the trichomes more intact but idk what I am doing I just make it up as I go along.
